The following information about the voluntary sector is taken from the NCVO website.

The first part of the handout provides a list of over 700 voluntary sector organisations in the UK which have a web presence. The second part gives an overview of the voluntary sector in the UK, its size and its funding.

Task:

The UK Voluntary Sector

The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) is the umbrella body for the voluntary sector in England, with sister councils in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. NCVO has a growing membership of over 2000 voluntary organisations, ranging from large national bodies to community groups, volunteer bureaux, and development agencies working at a local level. Key Findings from NCVO's UK Voluntary Sector Almanac 2002

The NCVO UK Voluntary Sector Almanac 2002 charts the continuing expansion of the voluntary sector. Headline findings include:

The voluntary sector's contribution to GDP accounts for £5.4 billion
The UK Voluntary sector created 85,000 jobs in the last five years
2% of the UK Workforce are employed in the voluntary sector (563,000 paid workers in 2000)
Gross income for general charities in UK in 2001 was £15.6 billion (a real increase since 1999 of 4.2%)
Single largest income category is income on investments (21.3% or £3.3 billion). Donations from the general public account for 19.7% (£3.1 billion). Grants and donations from other voluntary organisations account for 7.6% (£1.2 billion.) Government contracts and grants provide 28.34% (£4.4147 billion.)
Total current expenditure of general charities was £14.9 billion, equivalent to 96% of total income.
Staff costs account for £5.2 billion (35.2%) of expenditure; £4.8 billion (32.3%) is spent on goods and services; £3.5 billion (23.8%) is spent on grants and donations.

The ecology of the UK voluntary sector

Whilst there are 140,964 active general charities in the UK the economic weight of the sector is concentrated in a relatively small number of large organisations - 88% of gross income is accounted for by less than 10% of organisations. The overall number of general charities continues to increase at the rate of approximately 3,000 organisations per year. Although accurate estimates are hampered by the high levels of moribundity on the registers of organisations, this problem is now being tackled by regular monitoring.
