Prof. Steve Whittaker University of Sheffield HCI Researcher
Please note: I have recently moved to IBM Research @ Almaden Contact: whittaker at almaden dot ibm dot com
RESEARCH: CSCW, CMC, PIM, Speech Retrieval, Lifelogging The design and implementation of collaborative systems (CSCW), computer mediated communication (CMC), personal information management (PIM) and interfaces for information retrieval, in particular for speech data. Right now I am researching digital tools to help store and maintain personal memories (aka Lifelogging), and tools that extract of information from meetings.
ROLE I am a Professor, Chair of Information Retrieval and am head of the Information Retrieval Group in the Information Studies Department which was ranked top ISchool in the UK in last year’s research assessment exercise. In 2008, I was elected to the CHI Academy for ‘substantial contribution’ to the field of Human Computer Interaction. According to Google Scholar my h index is 40. Here is a link to my CV. I am Papers Chair for ACM Conference on Computer Supported Co-operative Work, 2010.
Current Research grants Temporal Tagging in Meetings, EPSRC Memoir: helping create and manage long-term personal memories. EU Marie Curie Grant. AMIDA: Augmented Multiparty Interaction with Distance Access. EU Framework 6
TEACHING I organise INF206/6060 - Information Retrieval: Search Engines and Digital Libraries and INF6430 – User Interface Design. I also teach on Information Storage and Retrieval Research (INF6090, INF309), Information and Communication Networks in Organisations (INF 103), Business Information (INF 304)
MEDIA COVERAGE The Economist (How people organise their desktops) Hermann Miller Magazine(!) (Organising desktops again) Technology Research News (Yet more desktops) Salon Magazine (Email overload) – you need a subscription to read it Computer World (On Social Networking Software) Computer World (Instant Messaging) Portland Business Journal (Accessing spoken conversations) Dallas Morning News and the Newark Star Ledger (Developing computer agents who can converse) Yorkshire Post (Digital Memories and Lifelogging) IEEE Spectrum (PDAs and gadgets)
There’s also a youtube video of a recent talk I gave at Google about Digital Memories and Lifelogging.
