Promoting information on the Internet

Sheila Webber, University of Sheffield (formerly University of Strathclyde)

This article was written for the October 1995 issue of Newsidic, the newsletter of EUSIDIC, and was put into HTML by the author with the kind permission of EUSIDIC.

The Web pages were created in September 1995 and amended (to remove URLs that had changed i.e. nearly all of them) in November 1999. There were a couple of minor amendments made when the article was moved to Sheffield University in August 2001.

Please bear in mind that sites will have changes since this article was written. I decided not to alter the text, as it represents the situation in the early days of the internet, and may be interesting from that standpoint.

Introduction

The concept of marketing via the Internet has become very trendy indeed. Strategies are being discussed in mainstream print journals like Campaign, PR and Ad agencies are setting up Web sites, and e-publications on the subject are mushrooming on the Net itself. There are numerous books on business use of the Internet, some with extremely dubious promises of overnight wealth.

This article discusses some of the ways in which the Internet was being used promotionally in 1995, and identifies some sites on the Internet which have useful collections of information about Internet marketing.

Sections in the article

The original article also had a page of links for "further reading", but this changed so much I have junked it. There is another page my current website with an updated list of links and resources to do with marketing
