There are 14 different document types defined and these are all listed below.

ANY - default document type, which searches for all 14 document types.

JOURNAL ARTICLE - searches for articles published in academic journals, professional journals and the Department's in-house journal Information Research.

BOOK - searches for authored books, edited books, contributions (chapters/sections) in books and book series.

CONFERENCE CONTRIBUTION - searches for contributions in refereed and non-refereed conference proceedings.

REPORT - searches for official published reports.

NEWSLETTER - searches for articles/contributions in newsletters.

MANUAL - searches for published manuals.

REVIEW - searches for published book or software reviews.

COMPUTER SOFTWARE - searches for published computer software.

RESEARCH THESIS/DISSERTATION - searches for PhD/MPhil theses, and MA/MSc Research dissertations.

DISSERTATION - searches for MA/MSc taught programme dissertations.

OCCASIONAL PUBLICATION - searches for publications in the Department's in-house Occasional Publications Series.

CRUS - searches for publications produced by the Department of Information Studies Centre for User Studies (this Centre is no longer operational). It includes CRUS Guides, CRUS Working Papers, CRUS News, and CRUS Occasional Publications.

PG SLIS REPORT - searches for early publications produced by the University of Sheffield Postgraduate School of Librarianship and Information Studies.

WWW SITE PAGE - searches for electronic publications on WWW sites.

AUTHOR NAME

Input a single author name to search for the incidence of this name in any part of the AUTHOR NAME field.

e.g. Wood
will find all incidences of the text string 'Wood' in any part of the field, including, for instance, surnames such as 'Wood', 'Woodward', 'Woodley', 'Usherwood' etc.

e.g. Wood, F.E.
In order to find particular author names more specifically, it is better to input surname and initials where these are known. The above example will find all incidences of the text string 'Wood, F.E.' in any part of the field.

TITLE KEYWORD

Input a keyword or keyword phrase to search for its incidence in any part of the TITLE KEYWORD field. Note that the keyword searching facility in this field is fairly simple.

e.g. info
will find all incidences of the text string 'info' in any part of the field, including, for instance, 'information', 'informatics', 'inform' etc.

e.g. public librar
will find all incidences of the text string 'public librar' in any part of the field, including, for instance, 'public library', 'public libraries' etc.

e.g. 3-d
will find all incidences of the text string '3-d' in any part of the field, including, for instance, '3-d', '3-D', '3-dim', '3-dimensional' etc.

YEAR

Enter a year or range of years using the FROM and TO boxes. If the TO box is empty a single year will be searched.

e.g. FROM 1990
will search for publications with a publication year of 1990 up to the current year.

e.g. FROM 1997 TO 1998
will search for publications with a publication year of 1997 to 1998 inclusive.

JOURNAL NAME

To locate a journal/periodical, input a relevant word or phrase to search for its incidence in any part of the JOURNAL NAME field.

e.g. manag
will find all incidences of the text string 'manag' in any part of the field, including, for instance, 'management', 'managing' etc. i.e. it would aid in searching for journals such as: Journal of Library Management, Information Processing and Management, Managing Information, etc.

e.g. Journal of Chemical Information
In order to find particular journal names more specifically, it is better to input a longer, more specific text string. The above example will find all incidences of the text string 'journal of chemical information' in any part of the field, and would locate the Journal of Chemical Information and Computer Sciences.

DEGREE PROGRAMME

This field is for use where DOCUMENT TYPE has been selected as RESEARCH THESIS/DISSERTATION or DISSERTATION. It allows you to specify which degree programme to search for. There are a number of different degree programme types and these are all listed below.

ANY - default degree programme, which searches for all degree programme types listed below, along with all degree programmes that are no longer offered by the Department.

PhD - theses

MPhil - theses

MA in Librarianship - dissertations

MSc in Information Management - dissertations

MA in Library and Information Management - dissertations

MSc in Information Systems - dissertations

MSc in Health Information Management - dissertations

MA in Information Technology Management - dissertations

MSc in Chemoinformatics - dissertations

FULL TEXT RESULTS

Search results can be restricted to those which have a link to the source of a full text version of the document by choosing the YES radio button. There are not many such records in the database, and these generally include some recent masters level dissertations produced by students in the Department, and a number of journal articles and conference papers.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC OUTPUT STYLE

Search results can be listed in one of two different styles: Bibliographic Style output or Field Listed output.
