Bfit - Barnsley Fastrack to Information Technology

As part of the Bfit Project the Trainee Technicians will participate in training, both internally & externally. As each trainee has different aims & requirements, depending on which career path they wish to follow, each member has a training programme that is individually tailored to suit them. Participants in the Bfit Project are endeavoring to combine both academic study and practical hands-on training.

Internal training combines both practical work and involvement in internal short courses within the University, i.e. there are short courses available on Web Design.

External training involves practical courses and also academic study in programmes such as the HNC in Computing, outside the University.

Additionally the trainees participate in the CISCO Certified Network Associate Programme which is beneficial to participating Trainee's. The CISCO course curriculum centres on teaching students to design, build and maintain computer networks. The course uses an e-learning based model which delivers web-based educational content, online testing, student tracking & practical exams with a curriculum developed by education & networking experts. Practical classes are held and tests are taken at one of the Barnsley Electronic Village Halls, members of which are part of the accredited CISCO Networking Academy.

As the BFIT Project has progressed, we have been fortunate in developing important links with Dearne Valley College, who have increasingly been providing our trainees with high-quality, academic courses, such as the HNC Computing course and the AS level in Computing. New courses will soon be available at the college and we shall be eager to incorporate them into our training plan.

A Model Plan

This is an example of a training plan for one individual. Other departments participating in the project include CiCS Frontline Support, I.T Centres, Information Studies, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Management School, Socialogical Studies and Archaelogy & Prehistory.
